We have some old news and some new news in the New York skate park world. Let’s start with the new news: Site Design Group recently posted a picture of the initial construciton for a new 15,700′ skate park which will be constructed by California Skateparks in Rockaway Beach, NY.
Now for some old (but good) news: Steve Rodriguez announced at the Long Ollie Challenge that he was recently awarded the Nike x Architecture for Humanity GAMECHANGERS grant. The grant will be used to redesign/reconstruct Coleman (aka LES or Manhattan Bridge) skate park. The new design is not final but Steve R suggested it might be similar to the Astoria skate park. Steve along with Preeti Sodhi (Architecture for Humanity) had a meeting earlier this month to kick things off and also put out a survey to collect some helpful data from the skateboarding community (please fill it out if you have a minute). So with Steve R involved, a nice amount of money and the skate community’s input we’re sure to see an amazing new LES/Coleman/Manhattan Bridge skate park. Can’t wait!
