Exclusive Interview: Ty Evans, Skate Film Innovator (2014)

At times skateboarding can become repetitive and boring but certain people come along and innovate. Either through tricks, style, attitude, graphics, overall brands or simply spots; skateboarding is and will forever be changing. When it comes to skate videos/films Ty Evans consistently raises the bar and continues to pave the way for close to 20 years now. He’s recently decided to step away from Girl/Chocolate after finishing Pretty Sweet and create a skate film with the media company – Brainfarm sponsored by Mountain Dew’s Green Label. We met up with Ty after a special preview in Brooklyn and discussed him leaving Girl/Chocolate,  HD vs VX, filming over Flushing globe in a helicopter and what his Brainfarm skate project is all about. Read what Ty had to say below including why there may or may not be a Chomp This 2 in our future.   Exclusive Interview via Alex Corporan: AC: Would you like to introduce yourself? TE: Sure, my name is Ty Evans and I’m actually 40 years old which is really crazy to me and I’ve been making skateboard films for half of those 40 years which is even crazier! I teamed up with Brainfarm which is my buddy Curt Morgan’s production company and started discussing the project. He approached me while I was in the middle of making Pretty Sweet and actually wanted to start then but I was like man I really have to finish this project first. So, I knew while I was making Pretty Sweet that it was going to be my last film working with Girl and I was going to try something new after that. It was hard, I loved working at...

Q&A: Welcoming Alex Corporan, Our Newest Member – Part I (2014)

Q&A: Welcoming Alex Corporan, Our Newest Member – Part I (2014)

Since the beginning days of NY Skateboarding we’ve had nothing but 110% support by New York OG Alex Corporan. So we’re stoked to announce that Alex is now part of the NYSB family! Alex’s endless list of involvement in the New York skateboarding community throughout the years is inspirational. From being one of the first skaters in NYC to film, to growing Supreme, to putting together the best NYC skate photo book, Full Bleed, to organizing countless events… he’s truly done it all. We sat down with Alex for our latest Q&A interview. Read what he had to say below. RS: You grew up in Washington Heights – have you been over to the new skate park yet? AC: Yeah, I was born in Brooklyn – Greenpoint Hospital – and raised in The Heights… The new park is super rad. It’s about time we have a skate facility to play with, especially for the new generation. It’s still not officially open but it’s being used very well by up and coming skaters. RS: How is it different skating NYC today vs. back in the day? AC: Back then when I started we were not cool. I was called so many names, but I didn’t care – all I was focused on was skateboarding with my friends and having a good time doing it. Today, being a skateboarder you’re a rock star in everyone’s eyes. Back then during my days, the only skateboard rockstar was Hosoi hitting the east and west. Now a lot of these kids are rippers, but there is a group that play the rockstar part without necessarily skating...
