About: In April 1994, Supreme opened its doors on Lafayette Street in downtown Manhattan and became the home of New York City skate culture. At its core was the gang of rebellious young New York skaters and artists who became the store’s staff, crew and customers. Supreme grew to be the embodiment of the downtown culture, playing an integral part in its constant regeneration. Skaters, punks, hip-hop heads – the young counter culture at large – all gravitated towards Supreme. While it grew into a downtown institution, Supreme established itself as a brand known for its quality, style and authenticity. Over its eighteen year history, Supreme has worked with some of our generation’s most groundbreaking designers, artists, photographers and musicians – all who have helped continue to define its unique identity and attitude.

Neighborhood: East Village

About: When DQM opened for business on November 1st, 2003, on a nondescript street in Manhattan’s Bowery district, a site of counterculture since the 1950s, home to CBGBs, the beatniks and punk rock, it had just twenty styles of sneakers, a few skateboards and five styles of house brand t-shirts on the shelves. Founded by professional skateboarder Chris Keeffe, born and raised in the heart and streets of New York City, DQM was built on a culture and relationships that began long before the store was conceived, and it quickly found the support of the neighborhood and the downtown scene. Remaining true to this history and its roots in skateboarding, DQM has grown to become not only New York’s premiere location for sneakers, menswear and skate goods, but also a fully-fledged brand in its own right, with a complete seasonal collection of clothing and accessories sold in select locations around the world. DQM has been proud to work regularly with New York City’s up and coming designers and photographers as well as with companies as well-known as Vans, Nike, Crescent Down Works, Mark McNairy, Stormy Kromer, Adidas, G-Shock, and Incase.

About: DQM is proud to announce the opening of our second store, in partnership with Vans, The VANS DQM General. The store is located in the heart of Soho at 93 Grand Street, in a landmark building and a neighborhood full of history. The General will not only carry on the mindset, respect and authenticity of DQM, but teams it up with the knowledge and values of Vans, to cater to the growing skateboarding and lifestyle community in New York City and beyond. “Over the past five years, no fewer than 100 people have asked me why we don’t have a store in New York City,” says Doug Palladini, Vans’ Vice President of Marketing. “My answer always was that we had so many great wholesale partners that our own store didn’t make sense, so when Chris from DQM approached us, it was the perfect opportunity. Chris and DQM really understand Vans as well as city culture and history, and know just how to bring our brands together to make something new and relevant for an area like SoHo”. “Vans has been a huge part of my life in New York both in the world of professional skateboarding, I rode for Vans for a time in the early 90s, and then as a retailer, selling them to my customers every day for the past 8 years,” says Chris Keeffe, founder and owner of DQM. “Vans has this long and storied history coming out of California, but at DQM we felt like the story of what Vans means to people in New York City can still be told through the prism of our Vans experience: we don’t have pools to skate and we have snow on the ground for five months a year. We grew up finding a way to wear Vans that fit the style and climate of our city. I wanted to create a space where we can tell this story from the ground up; a place that’s rooted in our local community and makes sense to New Yorkers.” The General will carry a curated selection of Vans footwear and apparel for men, women and kids; DQM apparel; and a special collection of DQM for Vans designed apparel and footwear available only at the New York store.

KRUDCO SKATE SHOP (1994)
Categories: Skateboarding, Sneakers
Neighborhood: Rochester
Links: NYSB Posts, Website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
About: So you want to know how Krudco. came to be ? Ok, well I can’t remember the exact day or even the exact year for that matter , but it was around ’92 or ’93 . The KRUDS came first.
O ne day Ron Beutera and I were out skating and we started talking about gangs and how the Crips and Bloods had a truce. Well one thing lead to another and we got into this big discussion about gangs joining together for a common cause, and became super gangs like the Blips or Cruds. Then Ron looked at me and was just like, “Shit dude we should call ouselves the KRUDS”,” hell yeah! I said, it’ll be fun.” And after that our crew became the KRUDS.
We were a bunch of skateboarders havin’ and makin’ fun of society and its “rules” (remember we’re skateboarders) . The OG KRUDS were, myself(Aaron), Ron B., Kurt S., Arden Z., Paul M,. Kerry B., Rachel D., and a few others were initiated into the family, but for the most part that was the OG crew. Well off to college,(MCC) fall ’93. Design class project, business card and logo for an imaginary business, mmmm, how about a skateboard shop?(mind you opening a store wasn’t even in my mind yet.) . . .
So in class we had to design/create a logo and company for the logo. Well as you know class projects take time, and in that time i meet a few really good people that i still see today. Al Beman (of the al beman band) and John Twentyfive. just given a shout out… so any way, i came up with a name that was a derivative of our crew. KRUDco. SKATES it only made sense to have a skateshop shop that was owned and run by you and your crew, so why not use Kruds in the title? my teacher kept asking me “why is the co. lower case?”, “why dose it have the period on the end?” “because that’s how i want it to be.” i don’t know why but she had a hard time with my answers to her question. oh’well. i passed the class and had a idea in my head for skateshop owned and run by skaters… it was the beginning.
I opened the first Krudco. in a office above my dads store (Tire Associates) at 209 N. Clinton Ave. on July 13th 1994… the shop was super small, it only had room for around 5 or 6 people at one time. we stayed in that shop for around 1 and 1/2 years… The hours were very limited so i had a pager and packed my Volkswagen rabbit with decks and did deliveries to people, i met the Boys from Brockport that way… Thomas Brodesser,Corey Vance and Danny Coleman. I also met Greg Lang and DanO. at this time and the Webster Heads, those were good times up in that place. thanks everyone who help us out so we could have our first demo at Sink Hole(Consolidated) and hosted our first contest… Thanks go out to My Dad and all the guys that worked at Tire Associates, Ben White, Travis Duke, Greg Lang, Dan O., The Webster Heads, Jim Young, Tumyeto, Consolidated, Natalie V., Elizabeth, Jen Fowler and all the heads at MCC… The Chili boys, and more people than i could possibly remember… THANK YOU!!
Then we moved…. with the help of Ben White,Travis Duke,Jamie and Jon Wolf, we found and set up the 83 Howell st. store in one week. Arden Zollweg and Alan Presutti help me move all the product into the new place. we had a grand opening and have been at this location ever since… that was around 1996.
