Pughkeepsie

It’s a sight you never want to see. Last week, people rolled up to Waryas Skatepark in Poughkeepsie to find a closed park and all the ramps moved out of place and stacked up in disrepair. This was the city’s response to local skater Doug Proto’s efforts to highlight the poor state of the ramps in hopes of getting repairs made to make it safe to skate for everyone. He immediately went into high gear to figure out how to save the park that he loves.

“Waryas Skatepark was a place that meant a lot to the community. This park brought all ethnicities together, it was a place where your age didn’t matter, groups of all ages skated and always had a great time. It was also a place where adults like myself could give advice and be a role model for younger kids. This was a place where kids could go and escape the streets. This place was a home to much of the community and the city fails to see that,” said Proto.

You can help save the park by calling the city council, making your voice heard online, or if you are near Poughkeepsie please attend the meeting tonight at 6:30pm in the Council Chambers, Third Floor, Municipal Building, 62 Civic Center Plaza, Poughkeepsie, New York. Parking is available under City Hall. Enter the parking garage from the westbound arterial highway. For additional information, please contact the City Clerk, at (845) 451-4225.
