The New York Times ran an article on 10/6/2013 titled “Despite Hazards, Street Skateboarding Thrives” by Winnie Hu which covers the rise of skateboarding and the increase of injuries & deaths on our NYC streets. It was an honor to be quoted in the article but my overall concern is that the increase of injuries or even deaths in traffic will eventually strip away our right to skate in the streets of NYC.

In the past few years I have noticed an increase in people learning how to ride in traffic and it’s terrifying. Especially on longboards which are designed for speed and have a wider turning radius. If you’re learning how to skate please get some experience and balance before hitting the busy streets. If we lose the privilege to openly skate the NYC streets (one of the best places to street skate in the world) we will be crushed! – RS
